The Siberian husky
Many have fallen in love with the wild nature and pride of the Siberian huskies, but are unaware just what this breed is truly like. This is not a breed for everyone and not a first time dog! Their beauty often drives people to buy them, unaware of their difficult behaviour, which makes many huskies prime candidates for shelters and rescue centres.
They are strong, compact, workings sled dogs and they are built for speed, agility and a long distance runner. Like all breeds, Siberian huskies need obedience training and both mental and physical stimulation everyday to keep them occupied. They are very good at escaping because they can easily jump and climb the fence, break tie-out chains, slip collars and find any other way to escape. Some call them the “Houdini” of the dog world!
They need a high fenced yard and the fence should also be buried several inches below ground to prevent him/her from digging their way out. Siberian huskies are very curious about new things and can become lost or injured while they are exploring something new. You shouldn’t have your husky off lead because they will run away and will also chase other small animals because that’s their prey instinct.
If you are thinking about getting a husky, take a lot of time learning about this breed, read books, visit some breeders or a shelter for dogs, talk to other owners and possibly foster one if you feel you can handle it. If after all your experiences you feel like you still want a husky take the time to decide on whether you should adopt a rescued one or buy a puppy but, just remember to follow the advices you are given and also remember that this beautiful dog will make your life an adventure and sadly not always a good one!
Temperament:
They are loving, gentle, playful, happy-go-lucky dogs that are fond of their families. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone. They are also very intelligent and trainable, but they will only obey a command if they see the human is more strong minded than themselves - if the handler does not display leadership, they will not see the point in obeying. They are a high-energy breed and can be destructive both indoors and out especially when they are bored. They are also very good escape artists, but a Siberian husky can be quite charming with their mischievous and playful nature, they are also very social and love to show off their talent.
Height and Weight:
Males 21-24 inches (53-60cm) 45-60 pounds (20-27kg)
Female: 20-22 inches (51-56cm) 35-50 pounds (16-22kg)
